International Negotiations essay

Negotiations are the talks or dialogues between the two parties of different ideologies. Additionally, when there is a conflict they are intended to achieve a satisfactory resolution for both. In the world today, major physical confrontations have led to negotiations aiming to resolve a problem. There are certain requirements for these debates, and they are imposed considering the welfare of the civilian population and the environment. These guidelines also apply to some challenges such as biasness and corruption, which have hindered the negotiations for peace. In relationship to the war between Israel and Palestine, the above issues have been discussed, and the recommendations for successful negotiations have been given below. There are the ways of resolving conflicts and reaching a consensus through negotiations conducted in a specified way that takes the present and future generations into consideration.

1A. REQUIREMENTS FOR SUCCESSFUL NEGOTIATIONS

One of the largest wars in the world is between Israel and Palestine. It is a serious physical confrontation between the two nations that has caused civilian deaths on both sides and wreaked the destruction of property amongst other consequences. There has been a growing desire of the international community to stop the war and bring peace between the two nations. The long-standing problems urge the international community to impose certain obligations to end the conflict. The states are supposed to consider the interests of each other to accelerate the negotiation process.

In accordance with Fisher and Ury’s model, the nations should put their focus on the interests of each other, but not on their positions or economic levels in order to achieve an adequate level of understanding. Before this, though, they should take time to prepare for the negotiations, which should be formal, and ensure the decisions are announced, and both parties are satisfied. The ideas contributed by each country involved in the conflict should emerge identify the exact cause and then be able to examine possible outcomes. If this is considered in the case of Israel and Palestine, they will realize their common religious and political interests so that it will ensure that peace will prevail between the two nations.

1B. APPLICATION OF THE REQUIREMENT FOR SUCCESSFUL NEGOTIATION IN THE MIDDLE EAST

The above requirements have been proved to be reasonable and the most precise to manage the large confrontations in the Middle East. This conflict has been a problem for every citizen of the concerned countries for quite some time since it is a cause of death and destruction of property.

1C. OVERALL ASSESSMENT OF THE “RIPENESS” OF THE CURRENT SITUATION

The current situation is still at the negotiating table where the Peace Convoy is still listening to the ideas of the parties to reach a peace agreement. The latter should be long-lasting to promote economic, social, and religious growth (Mitchell 50). They have not managed to do it, and peace has not been established yet. As an evidence, the Egyptian government has imposed sanctions to close its borders and withdraw their humanitarian aid to the Palestinians despite their poor state of affairs due to the war with Israel.

1D. WHAT TO DO TO IMPROVE THE RIPENESS

To improve the ripeness there should be a common peace agreement signed by the parties involved. It should describe their relationships, and how they should cooperate in a peaceful way. The concerns of each party should be closely and quickly considered to end the conflict between the nations to improve the life of the citizens economically and socially (Thompson 86).

2A. FORMULAS PUT IN PLACE TO SETTLE THE WAR BETWEEN ISRAEL AND PALESTINE

Certain measures have been implemented to settle the war between Israel and an Arab country, Palestine. These are aimed at building a long-lasting peaceful relationship between the nations. Israel has decided to withdraw its forces from all the territories that are termed as the areas of conflict. This was to ensure that the Israeli government is not in war with any other country in order to conduct peaceful negotiations that will result in a full peace agreement. There is also an order to dismiss the claims of disrespect, border disputes, and political conflicts in order to establish peace that is the primary goal of the negotiations.

2B. IMPORTANCE OF THESE FORMULAS

The physical confrontation between the Israel and the Palestinian nation has not arisen due to certain consequences. However, the negotiations are still underway to foster a more peaceful relationship between the two nations. The major aim and vision of this is to make sure that the Israelis and the Arabs are both satisfied, and that long-term peace prevails. This is actually a good way of resolving the conflict since it does not involve hurting the civilians and interfering with their affairs. It is a perfect step to establish peace among the nations at war.

3A. HOW PROGRESS HAS BEEN ENSURED BY “INVENTING OPTION FOR MUTUAL GAIN BY FISHER AND URY

Fisher and Ury’s theory of negotiating peace suggests focusing on the interests of the two parties in the conflict. They should do this rather than consider the economic status, political situations, or religious beliefs. It also suggests taking the emotions of the parties in the conflict into account to ensure that they are safe and that the situation does not worsen. The negotiations in the Middle East, particularly between Israel and Palestine, have explored these strategies in their conflict resolution. Egypt’s President Abdul Fttah al-sisi banned the provision of humanitarian aid and offered part of the Peninsula of Sinai to Palestine. The two nations with the help of the international body have completed a deal to end the wars by separating their citizens from the real problems or causal agents of the war. This is to ensure that the issues between the forces in the war remain their business without affecting the citizens of the concerned nations.

Israel and the Arabs also put the repercussions of the physical confrontation on their immediate environment. The Saudi Arabian king by the name of Salman passed an accord to reinforce the economy of Israel if at all they come to terms that Hamas established the table for negotiation. Therefore, they welcomed it and all the members agreed. They considered to end the war and provide a good background are perfect solutions suggested by Fisher and Ury. This would ensure economic and social growth among the citizens of the two nations.

3B. EXAMPLES OF HOW THIS EITHER WAS OR MIGHT HAVE BEEN DONE IN THE SIMULATION

An example of a conflict whose resolution has not declared this is the latest large war between the Likud and Kulanu of Israel and the Islamic Jihad. The Likud and Kulanu do not want to negotiate on the split of Jerusalem, but want full control of it. On the other hand, the leader of the Islamic Jihad wants Israel to withdraw from Palestine as he disagrees on state solution. These two nations did not consider the separation of the civilians due to the war effects and use of heavy weapons. Moreover, the environment was affected negatively, and it should be undoubtedly taken into consideration. The U.S. government, as a superpower, has not stimulated the interest of the Arabs in their own country and fought them causing massive death of the civilians and destruction of property. Considering all these actions, Fisher and Ury’s guidelines for peacekeeping were not followed, and negotiations were not conducted.

4A. MY PREDICTION WITH RESPECT TO LIKELIHOOD OF A NEGOTIATED SETTLEMENT BETWEEN ISRAEL AND PALESTINE

In the future, the war between Israel and Palestine will subside if the guidelines provided by Fisher, Ury and Thompson are followed. The main point of the conflict between Israel and Palestine is an idea that the Palestinians are irrational terrorists who are worth nothing. One of the major territories of their attacks are over the Gaza and the west Bank Jordan region. The Palestinians who fled and left the area for the Jews initially inhabited it. At present, there are negotiations to resolve the conflict in terms of determining the exact boundary and establishing the administrators of that area. Soon there will be an agreement and formalization hence there will be no reason for war over that area again in the future. This will make peace and promote harmony among the people of the two nations, which in turn will encourage economic and social growth. Territorial conflicts will be the cause for any physical confrontation between Israel and Palestine in the present and future generations.

4B. MY OPINION

The problem arises when the authorities responsible for the formalization of maps and demarcation over the disputed Gaza region are biased. The interest of one of the groups would be advanced, and hence the issues will still arise causing conflicts again. Corruption and biasness are the major factors in this way of resolving a territorial dispute.

4C. RECOMMENDATIONS TO PRESIDENT OBAMA AND THE UNITED STATES

I would strongly recommend that Obama should assist and pile pressure on both Israel and Palestine to come to better terms and impose them to the UN Security Council Resolution 242 of the 1969. In addition, as part of an enduring ceasefire, the border crossing of Gaza must be free to enable for the free flow of commerce and assistance with a suitable screening administration. There should be a reconciliation commission that deals with the issue of lands and borders that were occupied in the year 1967.

CONCLUSION

Every war or conflict, whether economic, social, and religious, needs sober minds to find a solution. This involves following stipulated guidelines by ‘qualified scholars’ about the manner of negotiating to establish long-term peace for the welfare of citizens. The requirements are the following: handling the emotion and the environment in the area of conflict and taking the interests of each group at war without taking into consideration other things such as economic or social status. Satisfaction should be ensured by both parties, and each group should have such ideas that will announce their purpose officially and proudly. These measures have been imposed during the war between Israel and Palestine to improve the situation. This has produced some changes, even though; negotiations are still underway to provide peaceful relationships between the two countries. The guidelines also have some shortcomings that have prevented the realization of the major goals of peace maintenance and long-term mutual relationships.
