Apple is known for its love of public relations, and the ability to escalate the situation around devices that do not actually exist. The manufacturer makes wait for weeks, months or even years before it announces a new device. Perhaps, one of the most long-term projects for Apple in terms of vague promises was the release of the first tablet computer. The company started talking about the tablet computer back in 2002. It took eight years before fans and lovers of gadgets were able to see and appreciate the iPad. At a conference in San Francisco, where in January 2010 the company finally introduced a tablet, Steve Jobs called it his greatest creation. However, that did not stop a crowd of disappointed critics from calling iPad the greatest failure of Apple in recent years.

The idea of a portable tablet device began to spread in 1983. However, rumors about the release of the device appeared in 2002. “Trusted sources” promised a sort of a big iPod without a keyboard. It would have 8 inches screen and the operating system OS X. The output of the tablet computer in retail sales was scheduled in 2004. In 2004, there was information about the registration of a device in the form of PDA by Apple in Europe. No one could have thought that the release of the tablet computer would only be in 5 years. Apple did not want anyone to forget about its work. Periodically, there was new information from “reliable sources” online.

The first impetus to the spread of rumors about the output of a tablet computer was the information that Apple buys displays not just for iPod touch and iPhone, but also displays with a larger diagonal of 9.7 ". It was assumed that the device will operate on the basis of axis Mac OS, have a big touch screen and come in the market in 2007. The atmosphere of general pother increased. Everyone eagerly awaited the release of the tablet computer, because its success could mean the loss of popularity of netbooks produced by Microsoft and HP. In 2007, resources stated that the new tablet computer would support multi-touch, have a display 1.5 times bigger than the iPhone and would be available in 2008. In 2009, passions ran high. Every week some resource released new sensational details about the Apple tablet. Sources could not determine the size of the new device. At one time, a version of the release of the device in two form factors was popular.

27 January 2010 is the day when a long-awaited tablet computer finally was introduced before the public at a conference. Steve Jobs proudly announced that his company was able to find and create something between a laptop and a mobile phone, the things that people enjoyed every day. However, there was slight disappointment, when people present at the conference saw something that reminded  a big iPod touch. Familiar icons, the field “Slide to unlock” and the operating system similar to iPhone OS did not inspire. In addition, there were also familiar games that developers provided: NOVA, Asphalt, and NFS Shift. There was a different size, but such a “native” content. Disappointment can be explained by high expectations, because before the company managed to surprise and delight customers with their innovative products. However, a high-quality screen, the ability to work with a large number of formats, compatibility with the App Store, and the possible keyboard connection via the dock are among the indisputable advantages of iPad. Critics agree that the tablet computer iPad is not the most functional device. At the same time they admit it is quite nice and stylish for working with documents and images, and browsing the Internet.

Despite the fact that the iPad is more like a toy than a serious gadget, it became quite a successful product. In 2011, iPad 2 was released. In contrast to its “big brother”, it has a thinner body, powerful dual-core Apple A5, as well as two cameras. In addition, the graphics subsystem comes in a  transformed way.  A new video card delivers performance improvements in graphics applications up to nine times. A three-axis gyroscope is also added. In this case, the power consumption and battery life (about 9 hours) are the same. iPad 2 is available in two colors to the delight of consumers - white and black; it comes with a different amount of the internal memory. iPad 2 is a welcome and status device for lovers of gadgets.

This way  a person can open a web page and download the content at high speed, no matter where he/she is.

Nowadays, tablet computers, whose market  formed a few years ago are competitors to PCs and notebooks. Every major manufacturer offers edits of its line of devices in this segment - Asus, Samsung, and Apple. In addition, the leading manufacturers of operating systems - Microsoft and Google  - compete with iPads for the influence in the market. Since 2010, when Apple introduced its first iPad, Android community tirelessly tried to repeat its success. To the great delight of fans, 2012 was a great year for Android tablets. A large number of devices with Nvidia Tegra 3 running Android 4.0 appeared.

In 2012, the Android tablet market reached its peak. Google Nexus 7was released. It is the most successful Android tablet that has ever been made so far. Despite the successful sales, Nexus 7 is a budget tablet and cannot compete with masthead iPad. As the company ASUS reported, the number of copies of Nexus 7sold per month reached 1 million. However, recently Google Nexus 10 was released, which is considered the most powerful Android tablet and a real threat to iPad. Nexus 10 has a clear display, but the screen of iPad 4 has better contrast and viewing angles. Both tablets can operate on the battery power for the whole day. However, the battery of Nexus 10 has a capacity of 9000 mAh while iPad 4 - 11560 mAh. Android takes all necessary steps to acquire a large number of optimized applications, but it still could not leapfrog iOS. Android did not manage to overthrow iPad from its throne. However, Nexus 10 cannot be called another loser.

Let’s compare iPad with Samsung Galaxy Tab 7.7. At the moment, Samsung Galaxy Tab 7.7 is the only tablet in the market with the Super Amoled Plus screen. The display has one of the best screens for this kind of devices. Such unrealistically bright and contrasting colors are not found in  any other tablet in the market. iPad mini gets a slightly better image quality. Samsung Galaxy Tab 7.7 is actually a normal smartphone.

Android fans claim that ASUS Transformer Pad Infiniti is currently the best tablet in the market. Despite the fact that the ASUS Transformer display has a very high quality, the reality is that Retina Display used on iPad 3 and iPadIpad 4 is the best tablet display at the moment. ASUS Transformer Pad Infinity is slightly thinner and lighter than IPad 4. However, the differences are very small to be finite factors in the choice between them. A very important advantage of ASUS Transformer Pad Infinity is that the Android operating system is fully customizable. However, its main disadvantage is a middle-class processor. In contrast to it, iPad 4 has the fastest CPU combination and a wide range of application optimized for the tablet. The main disadvantage of iPad 4 is the closure of the operating system.

Since its release in early 2010, iPad from Apple took the world by storm, uniting more than 25 million users. Its use in the aviation industry was only a matter of time, since almost immediately enthusiasts and then operators began to explore the potential of this device.  Countless applications made the device more accessible and, in fact, turned it into Electronic Flight Bag (EFB). It is an automated information management system, which helps the crew more easily and efficiently, with less paperwork, to solve problems of control in flight. iPad is an absolutely  unique, compact and durable device-tablet in aviation today. It offers the possibility of most commercial aircraft systems EFB. Numerous civil aircraft operators and manufacturers recognize this situation and support its implementation, both through the provision of coordination, and through further research and development.

There are hundreds of aviation applications for iPad. Thus, although it is almost impossible to list the specific needs of each user, a few necessary application categories can be defined. There are a few similar applications: Foreflight, Garmin Pilot, and WingX. It depends on the pilot which application to choose. Probably, Foreflight is the easiest application to use. Garmin Pilot has the most universal weather maps. The documents feature in ForeFlight is the most vigorous. However, the E6B features in WingX are a handy tool in flight. The main advantage is that all of these applications have a low price, so it is easy to purchase them. All of them have a free trial, and a pilot can choose the best application.

The application Foreflight Mobile HD is formed as “all in one”. It includes data for flight planning. Additionally, an integrated update manager import new graphics data every 28 days.  ForeFlight Mobile program provides information on 25 000 airports in more than 220 countries. A full description and schemes of airports are given. The program is designed for pilots. With the help of it, a person can get complete information about the weather, wind, and other environmental conditions. ForeFlight, which belongs to the category of EFB (Electronic Flight Bag), is a “virtual pilot bag” containing documents, maps, weather reports and more in a single application. ForeFlight is a GPS navigator like in the car. However, it does not work on the roads. It works in the air. To date, iPad is the only device from all non-specialized tablet computers which is officially approved by the Federal Aviation Administration of the United States. Earlier, flight preparation consisted of a preliminary call which gave all information concerning the flight: the environmental conditions and so on. Nowadays all this can be found at iPad. From this program, a person can also download the flight path with one click.

Garmin, the company- developer of satellite navigation systems, has introduced the aviation application Garmin Pilot for iOS devises. There are air opportunities for pilots, including detailed navigation, flight planning, access to the service DUAT (S), weather services, and support systems Electronic Flight Bag (EFB) on tablets and smartphones. The list of features of Garmin Pilot begins with the function of pre-planning, through which pilots get all the information they need to make timely decisions. In addition, pilots have access to the most detailed aviation weather services of the U.S. and Canada. They can check the weather radar data NEXRAD, infrared and television cloud pictures, weather METAR, information services TAF, AIRMET, SIGMET, PIREP, NOTAM, TFR, wind data, and air temperature, as well as data on thunderstorm activity. Pilots can also apply the weather data in the form of layers, create text weather widgets and use the NavTrack to review the planned flight in order to preview the weather. Using their own accounts DUAT (S), pilots can receive and record data weather briefings. The list of additional planning tools includes access to AOPA Airport Directory, information on fuel prices, as well as built-in calculators to calculate fuel consumption, route segments, and the time of arrival.

In any case, one thing is clear – the adoption of iPad can give the airline industry a major economic effect. Moreover, the appliance of the device is logical, both in flight operations and maintenance techniques. In the second case, iPad may have even greater potential.
