Introduction

Student motivation is one of the hardest tasks for both the parents and high school educators. Some students struggle in their studies, which makes them unmotivated. Students seem helpless and lose their desire to work harder in school. They view learning and graduation from high school as impossibility. Students may also feel helpless, lose their self-esteem and consider themselves as failures in the society. They do not anticipate the future and give up on any hopes of achievement of their childhood dreams and ambitions. Educators and parents have a crucial role to play in bringing these students back on track. They must come up with different motivation techniques to ensure that students graduate from high school successfully.

 

In my opinion, high school educators and parents can use different motivational techniques to ensure that students graduate from high schools with a sense of pride and accomplishment. It will give evidence from educators, parents and students regarding different motivation techniques which worked in the past to promote completion of high school education.

Educational psychologists have classified motivation into two distinct classes: extrinsic and intrinsic motivation. Intrinsic motivation comes from the desire of a student to learn a certain topic for self-fulfillment, achieve subject mastery, enjoyment and the inherent interests of the topic. Extrinsic motivation, on the other hand, refers to the motivation of a student to succeed and perform a certain task in order to accomplish a specific outcome or result. Extrinsic motivation refers specifically to students who target to achieve certain grades. On the other hand, intrinsic motivation refers to students who take genuine interests in their work and embrace it fully. It is the role of educators to observe students and determine what motivates each student specifically. They should communicate with parents about these motivations to ensure that they focus on the student’s specific orientations.

One of the main techniques of ensuring general student motivation is the attitude of an educator and parent towards the student’s efforts in school. They should not accuse students of being lazy. They should know that different students go through different phases of educational helplessness and often require support. Parents should stay in contact with educators to know the student’s progress in school . They should not wait for the student’s grades to go down, so that they can raise concerns. They should observe the student’s schoolwork on a daily basis to ensure that they are close and critical in knowing when a child has a problem at school. Educators should also apply different factors to motivate students after observing their orientations. Some students require praise, especially those concerned with effort, status and improvement. Others are autonomy-driven and require choices for motivation. Some students are inquisitive, in which case educators should use projects to motivate them. Some other students require affiliation, and educators should give informal awards for motivation. Educators should stay in close contact with students to observe their motivation. Students should also have a chance to show their talents, especially those who are power-driven.

Educators should use intrinsic motivation for students who show interests in subject mastery and are interested in the final result. They should give these students an opportunity to learn more on the subject, such as ample reading time and appropriate material such as the library and the Internet. They should check students’ assignments regularly and with corrections where necessary to ensure that students improve their final results. Educators and parents should relate academics to real life situations. These include pop culture, upcoming events and home culture. They should identify role models from different backgrounds to motivate students’ behavior and academics. They should invite role models to give motivational talks to students. They should also use previously unmotivated students who overcame this to become successful as examples.

Educators and students should also balance curricular and extracurricular activities. They should ensure that academic work should not be too easy for the students to lose focus. The work should not also be too difficult since it would discourage students. The difficulty should gradually increase as the student moves up the education ladder. Educators should give the work that is slightly above the understanding of students to ensure they grow academically. Educators should also organize field trips to places of a potential sphere of interest, such as software companies for a technology class. Finally, educators should come up with college fund accounts to motivate students with financial problems after high school graduation.

Conclusion

The essay proves the statement that high school educators and parents can use different motivational techniques to ensure that students graduate from high schools with a sense of pride and accomplishment. It shows that both parents and teachers have much to do in ensuring that students’ motivational levels remain high. Teaching styles, behavior of a teacher towards a student, course structure, informal teacher-student interactions, student praise and award of merit as well as assignments are among the techniques that educators and parents can use for motivation. These techniques encourage students to study as well as work hard in other activities at school to ensure that they graduate. However, it is the students’ right to make a choice on their attitudes and perceptions towards studies and motivational techniques. The student’s personal motivation will support other motivational efforts from parents and educators.
